Mother’s Day is a perfect way to spend some time with your mom. Special Mother’s Day gifts won’t replace your absence from her life during the year, so make a use of every opportunity to visit her and express your love and care. Bring her flowers for no reason. Don’t wait for Mother’s Day to come.
When that day is finally here plan fun things together, surprise her with a unique mother’s day gift so she can feel special and honored or just be around her like in the old days when you were a little kid and couldn’t live without each other.
My wonderful mom lives on the other side of the earth, and I don’t remember when was the last Mother’s day we spend together.
It is not easy for neither one of us living so far apart but when I go back home to visit I always bring her my love and something original and beautiful to give. Even though we are thousands of miles away, we skype almost every day but is not the same as giving her a real hug.
After I have become a mother, I realized what sacrifices mothers do and the unconditional love they have for their children.
I have always been very close to my mom but now I know in all respects what a mother is capable of doing for her child and how devoted was my mom when my sister and I were growing up.
That is why there is a tradition of giving presents and flowers of appreciations, although my mom always says ”All I want is for us to be together”.
Before I present some of the best mother’s day gift ideas, I wanted to go back in history and search for the roots of this holiday.
On Mother’s Day, we honor our incredible moms. Different parts of the world have various dates in which they celebrate Mother’s Day – usually they fall in the months of March or May.
So when was the first Mother’s Day observed?
It dates back to the age of ancient Greek and Romans.
They were organizing festivities to recognize mother goddesses Cybele and Hilaria.
During the 16 century in some parts of Europe, a holiday was celebrated by Catholic and Protestant Christians called Mothering Sunday.
It falls on the fourth Sunday before Orthodox Christians Easter.
Initially, it was observed as day on which people return to their ”mother” church for a special service but later became an event for honoring the mothers and giving them flowers and presents for appreciation.
In time, this custom slowly vanished before uniting with American Mother’s Day in the early 1920s.
The present American holiday of Mother’s Day was first celebrated in 1908 at a Methodist church in Grafton, West Virginia.
In 1905, following her mother’s death – Anna Jarvis started a campaign to make ”Mother’s Day” accepted holiday in the US.
She wanted to honor her mother by setting a day to pay tribute to all mothers sacrificing for their children more than anyone in the world.
Annas’ mom – Ann Reeves Jarvis used to be a peace activist who cared for wounded soldiers. She created Mother’s Day Work Club to point out public health issues.
By recognizing Mother’s Day as a holiday Anna wanted to pay respect to her mom by continuing the work she began when she was alive.
In 1914, Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation appointing Mother’s Day as a national holiday held on the second Sunday in May.
The holiday was adopted by other countries as well. However, they are many different dates around the world some selected due to religion, historical significance or an old custom.
So what can you do for your mom on this day? First, be grateful and cherish the moment that you have the opportunity to plan a perfect Mother’s Day.
Think about what your mom likes and enjoys most. There are countless options on how you can spend this day – a delicious breakfast at her favorite place or maybe some fancy cute little restaurant for dinner. You can take her for spa treatments or a short trip to do some wine tasting. Depending on where you live I am sure you will find many interesting and fun things to do together.
What about gifts?
Gifts are a form of appreciation and care. A lovely bouquet of flowers is a perfect addition to well-selected unique and useful gifts.
Below you will find some interesting choices. Some people might like them, some not but they are one of the best mother’s day gifts for me.

Hi Lena,
Thanks for your sharing. You’ve given me quite a lot of different ideas for the coming Mother’s day. I have prepared quite a lot of different things every day and just sort of running out of new ideas. I like the artwork jewelry you recommended. It’s nice and quite unique. I guess my mom will just love it.
Thanks

You know speaking as a mother, some of these gifts I would love to get, but I always just tell my sons to get me Amazon gift cards, because you can get anything on Amazon. But the truth is, even if they bought me nothing, I live for the cards they give me. Every year i get a card that has a hand written pretty lengthy note from each of my boys, and it means more to me than anything they could ever give to me. I keep them in a box, that I will take with me wherever I go, when I move from place to place. Those words are so precious, and mean so much more than anything that could ever be bought. But I really do like that butterfly box, It is really cool.
It’s very sweet that your boys get you a handwritten card every year! Not everyone cares about getting or giving a gift. Gifts given with love are charged with a positive energy and wearing or using them in your every day life, reminds you of the person who gave it to you, the memory associated with receiving it too it’s always alive. When that person is gone one day, you still have that amazing energy. Thank you for stopping by and commenting!

Lena
Hi there,
My mom lives far away too and I only get to call her and wish her happy mother’s day. Moms are precious and unique and deserve the best from their children.
I love the sculpture in your image of a mom holding her child.
That was a very story about the origin of mother’s day.
Hi Denise, I am glad you like the story of Mother’s day:) I too love the sculpture it reminds me when I first holded my baby boy! Thank you for stopping by and commenting!

Lena
How cool to learn about the history of Mother’s Day! Thank you for sharing that as well as the unique gift ideas. I absolutely love the Made Wirata sculpture. It really is both beautiful and powerful. And the Telavera server – I love the colors! Do you know if that can only be handwashed?
Thank you Kiersten for commenting! I am glad you enjoyed the history behind Mother’s Day. In regards to the Telavera server it’s actually dishwasher and microwave safe!
Regards,
Lena
My mother loved that sculpture! It’s very moving!
Hi Dan, I am glad you mom loves it! Now you know what to get her for Mother’s day:)
Thank you for sharing the origins of Mother’s Day in the US. I lost my Mom a number of years ago and I still miss her and think of her often. She was one of a kind who spent her life sacrificing for others. In the end she developed Alzheimer’s so our roles became reversed and I lost her bit by bit.
I feel for you to live so far away from your Mom but I am so glad that you do get to Skype each other. I am sure that she can feel your love each time you take the time to talk.
The gifts you have chosen to share are good ones and I think any Mother would be happy to have a loved one give her something like these.
Wish you well,
Glenda
Hi, Glenda and thank you for commenting on my post. I am really sorry you lost your Mom. I can only imagine how hard it is. I believe the most difficult thing in the world is to say goodbye to a loved one. That is why I wrote in my post that we need to use every opportunity in our life to visit Mom and bring her flowers for no reasons.
Thank you for sharing your opinion on the gifts I have picked.
All the best to you!
Lena
